i am a thief - i have stolen the name sake of grace from design sponge, i couldn't resist! she called herself the 'facet queen' in a recent post and i loved it. i feel i am also a facet queen, but perhaps i need to be the facet princess if she is queen? sometimes i just type in 'facet' or 'faceted' to etsy or ebay to see what delights come up. so, for some more faceted goodness, click here - i have been dreaming about a faceted terrarium since i saw hannah's sister olivia's at her house (neon green with envy). hers is glass and lead lined but i love these wood framed ones from fort standard. this really feeds two of my obsessions at once, doming things and geometric shapes - wow!

drawing room theory/brian hoy

finally! i am so pleased to share these photos from my visit to Brian Hoy's 'Drawing Room Theory' shop in the Mitchell Road Antique Centre. he was also gracious enough to answer some questions for me (and you!)

What is your profession and how long have you been doing it? i studied interior design at Enmore Design Centre and i also have a graduate diploma from the Australian Film, TV and Radio school. i have been working in the industry around 10 years.

When and why did you open Drawing Room Theory? i opened DRT 4 months ago and it is simply a creative project and a creative outlet for me.

How do you decide what to buy for the shop? when buying items i just go with what feels right, it's an instinctive process.

If you could click your fingers and have your ultimate find for the shop what would it be? the ultimate item in my shop would be something 18th century in gold leaf like a daybed or chair, i am lucky to have a selection of early 18th century books in the shop presently.

What is your favourite piece in the shop? my favourite piece in the shop is the 3.6m 19th century kitchen/dining table.

What was your vision for the shops aesthetic? the shops aesthetic has also been an instinctive one, the shop opened using a lot of colour and is presently a monotone array of gold, black, gray and white.

What inspires you most? my friends inspire me the most, followed by antiques from different periods and travel.

How did you come up with the name Drawing Room Theory? a drawing room is a room to withdraw to and be recieved, i would hope DRT has the intimacy and visual texture of a traditional drawing room.

Is your own home's style reflected in the shop? my own home is a soft palate of black, gray, gold and white as is very much along the lines of DRT.

What do you hope people will walk away saying when they leave your shop? i would hope people would enjoy the DRT experience and want to come back to experience more.

i adored these place mats that come in sets of 6 for only $15

i was completely enamored with this little painting, fortunately the artist is not far, check out flutter lyon's blog here and buy her work here at her store.

yesterday i went to the life instyle trade fair at moore park which was my first ever experience of this kind. i went with a girlfriend of mine Bec and her beautiful baby girl Evie...

evie wore her new zara neon blue sandals and attracted a lot of attention! since we were avec bebe we went to the kids instyle section first and i found these brilliant cardboard robots from a german company called calafant...

and from momot at monster threads i found these little paper guys...

one of the first stalls inside i saw was angle diamond who make the most exquisite raw stone jewellry...

i was also rather taken with these sweet little wing necklaces from pigeonhole

then came the influx of neon goodness, firstly floor cushions from phoebe langdon...

next was aztec goodness from pony rider...

and in the same theme these gorgeous feather cushions from blacklist studio prints. i also fell in love with their screen prints which, founder jaynie said are all the results of her and her partner's gifts to each other - so cute!

and i couldn't resist these floral skull cushions!

i had been lusting after a bonnie and neil table cloth for a while and finally saw it today, my favourite was the natural cloth with neon pink paint splatters, SPECTACULAR in person

a stripy version...

and then there was the always up lifting ada and darcy collection with fresh neon botanical prints

and finally, these gorgeous little woven baskets from lumiere art and co

i was so pleased to finally see my favourite lights in the flesh - coming into stores (and hopefully my house!) soon...

they are made by design house stockholm and can be be bought through vincent2

all the stalls were styled so beautifully, especially these from mud australia...

so the fabric arrived, i went to kate's and had a 'placement meeting', she told me that the upholsterer was horrified that i was considering keeping the hessian back because it was so hideous, oh well, as kate said, 'whatever the customer wants!' the hessian back of the chair back stays. this little $50 chair's adventure is nearly coming to an end and i couldn't be more excited to see the finished product. oh, and there was so much extra fabric that i will be able to get some great throw cushions out of it too!

i was directed to magnolia interiors after seeing a leopard lumbar cushion in vogue living that was right up my alley (not on the website, i will try and find a pic to post later) which led me to their blog showcasing the store and their work - great with colour and layering, really bright and fun. they also offer an interior design service. if you live in/near fortitude valley i am sure you have paid them a visit, if you live elsewhere you will have to love from afar! firstly, sorry for the hideous blackberry photo but i am at work, hence the awful carpet. my new subscription to beauty box began today and here's what i got: yes to cucumbers soothing on the go facial towelettes full size, australis paparazzi perfect eyeshadow in snap attack full size, agent provocateur eau emotionelle EDT sample, miessence sunflower body wash small bottle and nourishing hand cream sachet and avene ystheal creme anti aging treatment care for dry skin sample bottle. it all came in a little basket which is not cute, i prefer the glossybox packaging. it also came with a copy of just be magazine and if you stay with beauty basket for 3 months you get a full years subscription to it. did anyone else get this basket? what did you think of it? i will give it 3 boxes and see what it's like, as for glossy, well let's see how the next box goes...

i am very glad to let you know that i have finally managed to get back over to mitchell road antique centre to meet with brian hoy from 'drawing room theory'. remember when i promised to do a post on his exquisite shop a while ago? well i hope to get it up on the blog this week. brian is so sweet and gave me these heavenly place mats (pictured above) that he produces himself. watch this space for the full post and interview. now in the mean time i snatched up another piece of crystal from DRT and have added it to my collection which i hope gets as big as judy's one day...

i also spotted this sweet little taxidermic creature and thought i would share...

i hope it doesn't creep you out too much. oh, and i may have also picked something up that i was coveting last month..whoopsies

the ultimate find...almost

okay, so, as i have mentioned before i love going to thrift shops, and i have my personal favorites that i visit monthly at least, and every time i walk in i think today is going to be the day that i find something AMAZING (and i usually do find great stuff) but my ultimate find was always an hermes ashtray. i knew my chances of finding this were slim to none, but today it happened. I FOUND ONE! at first i saw it all hidden behind other vases and plates and thought, hmmm that looks a little exciting, then i picked it up and thought wow, who has knocked off this design so well? i turned it over and had heart failure...hermes paris. i looked again and saw the price...$3. wow. i hadn't looked properly at it due to intense excitement so after i had calmed down i noticed the design was not really one i would want displayed at my place (although i can appreciate how someone else would)....

sure it has a few chips (any hints as to how to fix this?) but still, i found an hermes ashtray at goodwill for $3. yay me

glossybox four is in and it's a valentines day special - the box is neon pink (cute) and came with a roll of love heart candy (cuter). i got a full size australis colour inject lipgloss in bollywood, a 60ml proactiv deep cleansing wash, a carmex moisture plus lip balm, a star and rose floral wonderland emergency nail files pack and a full size lily loves pearl balance me sweet orange botanical toner. i guess it was kind of ok this time, not bad enough to make me leave not good enough to make me excited. on another note i have just signed up to another box and if they are really good i will make the switch.

mini day in the life

a belated mini day in the life. on saturday i spent the morning catching up on magazines and eating our regular brekky at our favourite cafe. followed by one of my many pre wedding beauty treatments trying to get my skin into tip top shape (i swear by sandra at total body in bondi). i then went and had a final fitting for my wedding band, dropped beloved home and went for a shop with mum - picked up some new shoes which i will show you soon. when i got home, to my delight, i discovered that i had recorded the 90's Madonna documentary truth or dare (hence the gaultier toy) which i had never seen before and LOVED! she's so mean. that night i went for dinner and ten pin bowling with some peeps and had another visit to daiso where i bought some collagen facial spray and horse fat shampoo - so weird - i will let you know if they are any good, for $2.80 i imagine they will be AMAZING. and that was all in ONE day. sunday was spent making something for the wedding which turned out exactly as i would have hoped. not long until the wedding now, only 7 weeks...eeek!

i have been meaning to post about this book that my brother and his lady love got me for my birthday a few years back. it was custom made for me by artist tai snaith and it's one of my most favourite things. it is painted on a vintage psychology book (i work in that field) that she bought. book usually lives on my desk inside a glass display box with some other curiosities which i will hopefully remember to photograph for you v soon. i think she is exceptionally talented and creative. i have since been given another of her illustrations that hangs in my hallway and i can't wait to add a new piece to my collection. peep the rest of her work here.

hermes has found an adorable way to re use the leather and other materials deemed not good enough to make it to retail - the petit h collection. from deer to giant pandas and alligator coffee cup holders - all limited edition of course. they are created by artists in collaboration with veteran hermes craftsmen (the first aussie to be asked was paper engineer benja harney from paperform) catch it when you can as it's a traveling exhibit.

chair and i spent the morning playing dress ups at kate's shop fig. i thought i had finally chosen a fabric (which was different from the look i had firmly in my mind) but when i got home i decided i wasn't feeling my choice and that the look i had my heart set on in the beginning was still what i wanted, so, back to the drawing board. i did find a couple of amazing prints on the internet that kate will hopefully be able to source for me. watch this space...

remember when i was on the hunt for a bed head? well, i found an absolute beauty - the tribecca from bed nest. bed nest has so many styles, sizes and fabrics to choose from it makes it quite difficult to fall in love with just one (but i did). i love the idea of a bed head that has sides, i imagine it would make me feel more tucked in at night. perhaps if i keep my fingers and toes crossed really tightly i'll get lucky

ok, so third glossybox arrived, did it make the cut? here's what i got: a nivea rich nourishing body moisturiser (travel size), sheer cover nourishing moisturiser spf 15+ (travel size), sheer cover lip gloss in pink praline (full size), estee lauder advanced night repair synchronised recovery complex (travel size), sally hansen insta dry fast dry nail colour in petal pusher (full size) and (drum roll)..........some australia day temporary tattoos. i am not joking and i nearly died when i saw them. why do it glossy box!?! anyway, it was a pretty good box, i will probably use all the products (especially those tattoos tomorrow - watch out)

despite these, i am staying for another box...

a small snippet of my fridge door. i wanted to share my friends zoie and mike's save the date card, it's SO them and so attractive, i can't wait for may! (i will be an old married lady by then) i always thought it was ugly to put stuff on the fridge (it probably still is) but it's so freakin' handy to have reminders and invites right there. i treat ours like a calendar which is good if you want le partner to remember things. and don't you love my neon pink origami kangaroo? when i was out shopping with mum for her wedding outfit we had a peruse in miu miu (i wanted to try on the noir sunglasses, i LOVE them) i also spied my original dream wedding shoes on sale, still not in my size, luckily there wasn't some secret batch that came AFTER i bought my shoes to make me feel even worse about it

and FINALLY, i got my hands on the september issue for a price that i am not embarassed about! sure it has some wear and tear, but what good magazine doesn't? so thrilled i can stop recieving ebay alerts for issues that cost $400...

i have very shallow goals, one of these goals is to have a bowl full of urchins (thanks balletflats!), and a bathroom big enough to accommodate them. does anyone else share this desire? it would also be preferable to have a big fat wodge of coral there too. thanks vanessa for the inspiration!

i went shopping in the city today and found what i will be wearing over my wedding dress if it's freezing/snowing. i found it at sass and bide and it is surprisingly (for them) super simple. i have yet to try it on with the dress and i also want to try the other one i had ordered in on before i make my final decision. so pleased i am done on the outfit front so early. now we just have to find THE PERFECT suit for beloved to go with his PERFECT shoes.

i loved this shoot by mario sorrenti for the november issue of vogue paris. i don't always like emmanuelle's stuff but this one is a winner. i think i love it so much because its all denim and knits, all cotton, which is the only fabric i can stand to have on my body. i love the rips and tears and the shots of pink, bracelets piled on and mussed up blonde hair. i wish it was winter now!

thankfully i found these photos i had been looking for, my paternal grandma and grandpa (connie and bill). i never met connie, she died when dad was a teenager and grandpa bill died a few years ago. dad couldn't find ONE photo of their wedding but there were quite a few of these shot by street photographers in the 1930's - and i am SO thrilled i have them to use in my wedding. we now have photos of all grandparents on both sides apart form mums parents so fingers crossed someone has one of them together!

shoes secured! these were IRRESISTIBLE and very me. in other news, i also found something to wear over the dress, it had to be ordered in from melbourne and will arrive on tuesday, hope it works. i also did a hair trial today which worked really well (my hairdresser is, fortunately for me, a guest at my wedding so she will be in NZ with me!)

i may have also found some rather delicious silky cape-y shirt-y lover confection in my travels today. it was on sale so it's ok and doesn't count

and finally, i got my menu's to the printers. we are using the distillery letterpress who are just down the road from me and do AMAZING work. i have made some changes to the menu and i am so excited to see it all come together. only 10 weeks to go today!

i am on a mission to find this one particular photo of my dad's parents for the wedding. it's one of them walking down the street in the city, he is wearing a 3 piece suit, she is wearing a pencil skirt and fox fur with felt hat. i used to look at this photo all the time wondering how they managed to be so chic just for a trip to the city. when i find it i will post it. anyway, this meant that i uncovered all my old polaroids. the ones above are, as you can see, of lindsay lohan. a girlfriend of mine is a stylist and did some work with her at one stage, she was doing a throw out/garage sale and i snaffled these polaroids from a shoot (along with some chanel scarves and my 'park bench') the polaroids below are from one of me and hannah's LA trips, we had SO MUCH FUN on those trips (incidentally, she wants to go on one more this year but with BOTH our weddings (!!!) i don't know if this will be possible) maybe next year H

i was recently directed to watch this cute video of chloe sevigny walking us through her closet (there has since been another) which made me remember how obsessed i was with a cushion i saw on her lounge in her grenwich village apartment a few years ago (pictured). after a bit of investigating i discovered it was called the 'morrissey viva hate throw pillow' by claudia brown, she only made one as an homage to her favourite musician (all hand embroidered) and chloe has it. she has since begun producing them, albeit a silk screened version and not in the vibrant blue colour, but if you are interested you can order them here. i LOVE chloe's apartment, especially that fabric her lounge is upholstered in. in the original H&G 2007 article she talked about wanting to recreate that 'beaten down WASP late 60's look' and she did it so well! i wonder what her place is like now? and where that cushion is...

i need a new friend for my rings (the jordy askill was purchsed years ago and has been reshaped a million times because i keep bending it and the pink gold love band was my engagement ring). i am particularly enamored with the forefinger ring variety and, predictibly, anything gaia repossi (this one please). i am getting a wedding band made this week which is skinny and sparkly in pink gold but i want something that is more costume-y without being costume jewellry because, as luck would have it, anything other than silver or gold tends to explode on my body, even gold plated doesnt work. does anyone have any suggestions?

another team claud and hannah project, me styling and hannah taking the photos - enjoy!

this is the heavenly home of my partner's cousin, his wife and their 4 adorable kids. it's like a giant luxury villa, there are louvre windows encasing the whole house so there is a constant breeze flowing through and it's all marble, stone, sandstone and glass. they used interior architect susannah esdaile (who is a close family friend of mine and she did my parents house) who did an INCREDIBLE job, utilising every space available for storage and function but making it look really chic and minimal. then there is the fact that the owner obviously has amazing taste, and what's nice to know is that she is a bargain hunter, sourcing everything herself, making it all look so damn good must have been alot of work!

real living update

remember how i entered into the real living comp, well......i didn't win! i knew i wouldn't because for starters they used the worst picture, i thought they wanted the pictures for reference, not to use and secondly there were lots more rooms better than mine. oh well, they left some positive feedback for me in the mag...ian halliday said "the owner clearly understands the arrangement of objects - elegant but casual" and jacinta preston said "a great study of how prints can make a room come alive - the chevron adds a blast of energy balanced with a couple of shots of colour" so that was nice to get that feedback. in better news, i have just acquired some new cushions for my bedroom and will hopefully do a post this weekend to show them off!

the farm

my family went down to my aunt and uncle's farm over the break, it's only about 3 hours out of sydney but it seems like a million miles away. they have only lived there for about 3 years and have slowly been doing it up so i thought i would share some photos of my aunties great style.

the table was $5, i nudged it and about 100 tiny spiders fell out, apparently a wasps bounty!

i am in the mood for some new cushions. i want fresh white linen with four big fat natural linen cushions on the bed. i want them to be karate chop-able and all squishy. i want the bed to be a place you want to dive into and be all fresh. i just wish we weren't renting and could do something about the hideous blush carpet that has seen better days! it makes me want to make less effort because it will never look exactly how i want it (floor boards obv.) i don't even think a rug will make it better, unless it's really big and covers the whole floor! actually, maybe i should look into that. and then there's the issue of the bed head. it's definitely on my 'to buy' list for the new year. here is some inspiration..

it's a vogue FRENZY this month with vogue UK, vogue australia, vogue living australia and vogue paris and they are all GREAT issues. vogue paris in particular is a beauty this month and it's huge, more like a september issue. my favourite discovery of the issue was kate moss' collection for french jeweller fred. think tiny tiny diamond encrusted stars, moons and anchors and thin as a wisp stacking rings. not sure when/where i can get my mits on some but it's my mission to find out! click here to peep the collection

my sweet, sweet beloved walked past a national geographic shop and bought this for me knowing my love for dinosaurs. this one's great because she is soft and bendable

my beautiful friend jacqui ~~pilfered~~ bought me these gardenias, she got me two big fat bunches and my ENTIRE place now smells of sweet gardenia

finally, i bought two vase options from ebay for the wedding. the ball jar on the left is too tall and slim and the beaker may be too polarizing. it all depends on something special i am waiting on from etsy. i was actually contacted by the florist and she said she may be able to get the vases i desperately want so fingers crossed, not sure how she will react when i tell her we are doing the flowers ourselves! keep you posted peeps...

this is my first ever cire trudon candle from my future mother in law for my birthday. these bad boys were created by claude trudon in the 17th century and quickly became the royal wax manufacturer serving the queen and most of the large churches in france. trudon were the favourite candle of marie antoinette (there is one named after her) so much so, that sofia coppola used them in her 2006 movie 'marie antoinette' to add authenticity. in 1811 napoleon gave his son only one present - a cire trudon candle, are you getting the picture about how amazing they are? cire trudon is now the oldest, most prestigious wax manufacturer in the world and can only be purchased at a few places in sydney: serin cini, becker minty, the country trader and robert burton (and more recently online at net-a-porter). to make them even more special, each candle has it's own story and artwork as depicted in the booklet that comes with the candle (below)

bored/revitalised enthusiasm for polyvore plus i just bought some red pants and have been umming and ahhing about getting leopard flatties. F.Y.I the nail cuff is vintage hermes from 1st dibs, amazing huh? and i am equally amazed/obsessed with ileana makri jewellry and would not turn this necklace down (J?) the denim shirt is basically glued to me every day and i am a huge scarf girl, this one from marant is an absolute beauty. the peonies were added because i am still grieving about not having them at my wedding, i should have got married NOW when they are in season, i'm sure girls do that don't you think? the celine is an unjustifiable dream (i'll settle for an emile though) and the breton stripe is ksubi. lastly, i am freshly obsessed with illuminator and this one from nars is on my must buy list, also from nars, the schiap nail colour makes me feel good.

it was the bathroom that first piqued my interest in this home, the rest is not altogether my style but i so appreciate it none the less. there are tonnes of little elements that i love about the home of sister jane designer bea deza (i'll take one of these please) most notably, the blue painting and fine gold nest of tables, the high ceilings and the zebra, the skull, the fresh stone bathroom and the hints of pink. if it was just those elements then it would be my perfect place but it's not, its bea's and from what i have read, it's perfectly her. thanks elle decor spain for the heads up!
